Wood Types

I work with a wide variety of solid hardwoods and softwoods. The choice of wood species greatly affects the appearance, durability, and workability of the finished piece.

Oak

Strong, durable, and widely available. Red oak has a pinkish hue; white oak is more golden. Both take stain well.

Walnut

Rich, dark chocolate-brown color with straight to wavy grain. One of the most prized furniture woods.

Cherry

Warm reddish-brown that deepens beautifully with age and light exposure. Fine, straight grain.

Maple

Hard, light-colored wood with a fine grain. Excellent for cutting boards and furniture that will see heavy use.

Pine

Soft, light-colored wood with prominent knots. Rustic and affordable, often used for painted pieces.

Mahogany

Classic furniture wood with a reddish-brown color and straight grain. Takes a beautiful finish.

Ash

Light-colored with a prominent grain pattern. Strong and flexible, often used for chairs and tables.

Hickory

Very hard and strong with dramatic color variation from cream to brown. Rustic character.
